The 4th of July will be here on Saturday, wow, this year seems to be going by quickly! Daryl Shawn has come through to ease us into another summer with a new top ten of the best in fingerstyle guitar! The world is beginning to open up after crisis and the music is flowing! Thanks Daryl for helping to keep us going and entertained during this time and all the rest of the year!

"The most exciting playlist on Spotify" reloaded again for a great Monday morning! "This Week in Fingerstyle" curated by Daryl Shawn is where you'll find the absolute best that true "Indie" has to offer in the world of fingerstyle! Daryl does all the selecting of the tunes, I just make a few comments. Put your headphones on or AirPods in and disappear into these wonderful sounds as we check out what gems Daryl found for us this week! "This Week" now has over 500 "Followers" enjoying this weekly treat!

First up is "Le Meglio Storie Con la Mia Chitarra" by Franco Morone & Ulli Boegershausen. What an absolutely pleasing song to wake up to on a Monday morning. Reminiscent of the finest folk festival music, this is happy, "dance on the grass" music that just makes you smile and for a few minutes you haven't a care in the world. That music can do this brings a tear to my eye as I enjoy the big smile that lasts the entire song. Thank you for making us happy Franco and Ulli!

"Hairpin" by Matt Harp is hard-driving modern fingerstyle in a blazing display of skill and ferocity. No fear of losing control in this hairpin turn, Matt keeps all four wheels firmly on the ground and thrills us! Well done Matt!

Andrew York's newest "Numen" is a cerebral piece with influences from the orient. Like a calm walk through a zen garden with time for reflection and thought. As deep and satisfying as music gets!

"Sugar" by the spectacular Casper Esmann is a cover the groovy Maroon 5 song where Casper pulls out all the stops and dazzles us with the treble that sings from his beautiful guitar! You'll be dancing to this one!

"Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" is my own interpretation of this beautiful piece we all loved in our childhoods and love to share with our kids and grandkids! I tried to give it a little twist and it should appeal to "kids" young and old! Just sit back and revel in fond memories or hold your grandkids on your lap and enjoy!

"Tiarna Mhaigheo" by Stephen Wake is some Celtic at its best! There simply are not adequate superlatives for Stephen's playing. Celtic music originally drew me to fingerstyle guitar 40 years ago and has kept me pickin' for those 40 years, but I never seem to achieve the fulness, the richness nor the airy heights that Stephen manages with every piece! Masters at their craft are those that can create something that the rest of us never quite manage. Stephen takes us to those rarified airs with every piece he plays. Celtic music has some of the most beautiful melodies, intricate harmonies and deep melancholies that music has to offer, but when played, often comes across as somewhat "simple". Stephen brings out all the complexity, beauty and intricate depth that this genre has hidden for those that take the time to dig deep enough. Mo cheol thú Stephen!

"No Words For Leaving" by Ken Smith is stunningly beautiful with its depth and clarity. There are times in life when things don't go as we have planned for oh so long and we are powerless to change the way they play out and leave us feeling hollow and unsatisfied. Ken captured those feelings of loss and helplessness in a beautiful way letting us see through the tears deep into the essence of love and loss. The guitar is beautifully done and sparse allowing us to savour the emotion and leave us with no doubt that although things don't always go as planned, we find a way to show our love and move on with each new loss to continue to find and enjoy love and life. Thank you Ken!

"Southern Magnolia" by Maneli Jamal is a brilliant display of skill in all aspects of guitar, from the composition to the story-telling to the difficult and precise execution of runs, hammer-ons, pull-offs, tremolo and harmonics that is truly amazing! To be able to pull this off and end up with a beautiful piece that can be just "listened to & enjoyed" is rather amazing: the blazing skill enhances rather than distracts from the story and the beauty of this music. I tip my hat Maneli and sit in awe.

"Sundance" by Elson Complex is raw and moving in a way that commands your full attention. Whether you are in a crowded room or alone with your thoughts, there is simply no way to ignore the beauty and intensity of this piece: it grabs you, holds you and fully engulfs your consciousness.

"On An Evening Like This" by Rick Cyge is a blend of Celtic with other influences that creates a musical bridge between cultures and genres creating a musical blend that leaves you feeling full of love and good will for humanity in general and those that have spent their lives creating beautiful music in particular. Thank you for all those "evenings like this" that you have created with your life's work Rick! A beautiful piece!

And don't stop there! Remember that all the past selections follow the new top ten starting with "Woke" by The Field Tapes & Matt Tondut!

Daryl Shawn, thank you again for making my Monday mornings a very special and exciting part of every week!

And that's it for another "This Week in Fingerstyle" by Daryl Shawn who every week puts together "the most exciting playlist on Spotify"!
