COVID-19 has consumed and changed our lives over the past couple of months, but Daryl Shawn has come through with a new top ten of the best in fingerstyle guitar every week during this worldwide crisis: Thanks Daryl for helping to keep us going and entertained during this time and all the rest of the year!
"The most exciting playlist on Spotify" reloaded again for a great Monday morning! "This Week in Fingerstyle" curated by Daryl Shawn is where you'll find the absolute best that true "Indie" has to offer in the world of fingerstyle! Daryl does all the selecting of the tunes, I just make a few comments. Put your headphones on or AirPods in and disappear into these wonderful sounds as we check out what gems Daryl found for us this week! "This Week" now has over 500 "Followers" enjoying this weekly treat!
First up is "Black Earth" by Ali Deniz Kardelen is like sitting down to have Ali tell us a captivating story through music! A thrilling story with a lot to digest! This hearkens back to the start of modern fingerstyle but done with a new & fresh approach in a way that will leave you sitting on the edge of your seats!
"Refraction" by Realizer (Matt C. White) & Mark Grundhoefer is another track off the recent "Cambium" album and gives us the signature sound that Realizer has developed over the last few years but adds the treat of Mark's instrumental excellence and with some tasty mandolin to spice things up. This one ends far too soon! Let's do another one guys!
"Daydreamer" is one of Liad Abraham's latest and is the perfect song to reveal Liad's stellar guitar skills, his ability to compose a truly beautiful melody and keep us suspended in that state between consciousness and the world of dreams. If you are somehow unfamiliar with Liad's work, this one will show you why he is becoming a worldwide sensation! Thank you Liad!
"Lockdown Jam" is Mathew Joseph pinned down at home like the rest of us, but Mathew put the time to good use and gave us a "jam" that is true "world fusion"! A little flamenco, a little bluegrass and just a blast to listen to while we slowly move from lockdown back to the real world!
"Scarborough Fair" by Basil Wahn is the familiar tune we all recognize but interpreted by Basil in a way that has a little dirge, some nice slides and an accentuated 3/4 beat that makes it almost impossible to keep my feet still! Really beautiful Basil!
"Helping Hand"! What can I say about these two teaming up to give us something greater than the sum of their individual talents! Agustin Amigo and Lance Allen really deliver with beauty, finesse and a picture of hope! This one is sweet enough for a lullaby, but full enough for the first dance at your most special event! Well done!
"Como el Sol" by Nylonwings (David Westin) is like the sun indeed! A day basking in the sun on a Mediterranean beach under a cool cabana with your favorite libation has trouble comparing to this lovely tune! Talk about that "laid back" feeling! You nailed it David!
"All Leaves to the Moon" by Spare Planet! Heiko Lohmann gives us 5 minutes of absolute peace and serenity! So nice for a way to calm down and look at Monday, or any day, with calm and reflection. Love this Heiko!
"Level of Concern" is the "Twenty One Pilots" cover by Tambo, and what a wonderful cover it is! Capturing just the essence of the song on beautiful nylon string guitar, it is everything it needs to be! Beautifully done Tambo! And I am thrilled to announce that "Tambo" is the new pseudonym of the exceptionally talented and inimitable Daryl Shawn himself. I should have known this was Daryl in disguise with his one-of-a-kind way of taking just the essence of a song and giving it everything it needs; "minimalism" at its absolute finest! Excited to see what "Tambo" brings us in the coming months!
And capping it off is the Latvian sensation, Vadim Kobal, creating a cover from the far away (from fingerstyle) genre of hip-hop and turning it into a beautiful fingerstyle addition! Well done Vadim, you continue to introduce me to a world that I rarely see! Wonderful vision creating this one! A great way to cap off the new top ten on "This Week in Fingerstyle!"
