In the midst of the current COVID-19 "worldwide madness" out there, it seems even more important to find some normalcy in our routines: Daryl Shawn has come through for us with "This Week in Fingerstyle" on time and beautiful as always!

"The most exciting playlist on Spotify" reloaded again for a great Monday morning! "This Week in Fingerstyle" curated by Daryl Shawn is where you'll find the absolute best that true "Indie" has to offer in the world of fingerstyle! Daryl does all the selecting of the tunes, I just make a few comments. Put your headphones on or AirPods in and disappear into these wonderful sounds as we check out what gems Daryl found for us this week!

First up is "The Walls Are Moving" by Ulli Boegershausen & Agustin Amigo. Every once in a while music is truly amazing and Ulli & Agustin have that compositional ability to create music that sentiently describes a feeling or circumstance. This song is a perfect lesson in building tension without resolution. It resolves perhaps to a tolerable level of anxiety but leaves us with the clear understanding that indeed "the walls are moving". Imagine curled up in a ball in the corner of an empty gray room (cell) with no furniture, low light, and damp walls. Feel the madness as the walls literally move or crawl around you and no where to escape. That's the picture this evocative song paints. Despite the deep terrifying cry for help, this one has me going back again & again to try and find comfort in a terrifying world.

Mike Dawes is a master of fingerstyle percussive technique and "William Shatner's Pants" are the lucky recipient of that talent this time! This one flows like the beautiful African savannas that Mike visited recently. Just a beautiful master class in the art of percussive fingerstyle; never too much of anything, just the perfect blend!

"Fanta and Felix" by Derek Gripper: I'd love to know the story behind this one. Like two cats slightly bored amusing themselves with a string they pull and let go but keep coming back to check on it. Just delightful!

"Dig" by Matt Harp! Soft and flowing like a diaphanous gown that just sort of floats beautifully keeping us mesmerized and focused! Total finesse in the world of fingerstyle! What a beauty Matt!

"Reason To Shine" by Ken Verheecke! I look forward to every one of Ken's pieces. Ken is the one person I know who has lived an entire life moving in the direction of the apocryphal heaven, and every song is a new step in that direction. If anyone gets there as a result of their music, it will be Ken! And he is going to provide the musical steps for the rest of us to join him! Thanks Ken! Always a pleasure!

"Serious music" is what I would call "La Compagna" written in the early 1500's by Francesco da Milano, performed by Jürg Kindle. In the sixties we used the term "high brow" but that had sort of a negative connotation and this music has not an ounce of negative. Regardless of your background, this piece satisfies and is just about "the perfect partner" (La Compagna) in every sense! Bravo Jürg for bringing some light and perfection to this 500 year old piece!!!!

"Fly Flamingos" by Charlie Wilks. Don't know anything about this artist, but there is much to explore. The debut album "Golden Hills" has a cornucopia of styles and skills that just explode for the lucky listener. "Fly Flamingos" is sweet, and pastoral with a view to the sky that builds providing hope along the way. Listen to this one and you will leave knowing that "everything will be OK."

"Kabuliwala" by the master musician of Toowoomba, Mathew Joseph! So many styles and so much music in this man! It's like Mathew circled the planet, and in a big breath sucked in all the musical styles of the world. After many years of just enjoying the "taste" Mathew is now slowly exhaling and with each breath flows a new song of impeccable quality and diversity. Never the same, each song is different and that is why Mathew calls his music "world fusion"! How fortunate we are to enjoy the result! "Kabuliwala" is the story of a vendor of dry fruit from Kabul who travels to Calcutta each year to sell his wares. A friendship develops between the vendor and the writer's daughter. Mathew captures the intrigue and depth of the story in a way that makes us not only want to read the story, but listen to every other story that Mathew has to tell!

"Adrift" by Barry Mcloughlin! "Measured melancholy" is how I would describe this beautiful piece by Barry. Having seen a lot of music in his 50+ years of life in the world of music, Barry has mastered the art of just letting the music ooze out at a pace that keeps us thirsting for the next drop. And how sweet is each new drop! There are tears in my eyes as I listen to this one, but I can't help going back for more and more, and with each listen a deeper sensitivity results. We may all feel a little "adrift" in this world right now, and Barry captures that uncertainty in the most beautiful way. Thank you Barry!

"Mom's Wedding" by one of my favorite artists, Casper Esmann is a sweet waltz that must have an incredible story. Grace, maturity, poise and finesse are the characteristics of the woman described in this beautiful dance. I'm always impressed by the depth of feeling that Casper manages to bring to his songs and with this one Casper has written a waltz for the eternities. Every mom should be so lucky as to have the perfect piece written for her day! Truly beautiful Casper!

And don't stop there! Remember that all the past selections follow the new top ten starting with Will Taylor's "Gone For Now!"

Daryl Shawn, thank you again for making my Monday mornings a very special and exciting part of every week!

And that's it for another "This Week in Fingerstyle" by Daryl Shawn who every week puts together "the most exciting playlist on Spotify"!
