“Artistry Tuesday”: Spotify Artist - Lunng Fern
by Randal Meek

It's so easy and comfortable to "follow the crowd", but exceedingly difficult to go in the reverse direction and put it full throttle in reverse as Parzival did in the intense road race searching for the first key in "Ready Player One". Every once in a while those intrepid souls who "go against the current" win the prize! In the world of fingerstyle guitar, one of those intrepid souls is Lunng Fern!

Like Parzival, Lunng is young at only 24 years of age. Like Parzival, he is not afraid to pursue a different direction. And in his hands "everything old becomes new again"! While most everyone is chasing the new percussive techniques of "modern fingerstyle", Lunng brings a mixture of Flamenco, old gypsy, medieval and folk to create a musical recipe that is exciting, scintillating, and intoxicating! Listen to Lunng's debut album of 2017 "Pilgrimage" (self-produced in a friend's attic and released at the age of 22) and you will be mesmerized as though sitting at the feet of a wise old master who has taken the form of a young man!

Lunng Fern's musical journey began at the feet of another master in the form of a blind guitar teacher who imparted a wisdom, beauty and an approach to the guitar that may escape those with the "blessing" of all five senses. From there Lunng traveled throughout Europe and sucked the marrow of life from every corner of the old country. The result is an artist who emerges with a style all his own that hearkens to former times when life was slower, more savored and more contemplative. With a depth of emotion and skill, Lunng's playing absolutely thrills and draws out the passion that is so difficult to find in this fast-paced world.

Lunng's playing exudes imagery of the many European public squares and cafés where his art was honed and brings tears to my eyes! With titles like "Pilgrimage", "Chant", "History Transformia", "Out of Fasting" & "Breaking the Fast" this is not an artist appealing to a teeny-bopper crowd nor an audience wanting the tried-and-true. His latest 2019 releases "Window" & "Stumbling Home" show a continuing deeper maturity and refinement of his raw talent and compositional skill.

This is a young man with musical wisdom and insight far beyond his years. With a German heritage, Lunng Fern seems somewhat a happier incarnation of the "Pied Piper of Hamelin" enticing us to turn from the direction of the herd and follow him to a new land in the world of guitar! I for one am following this tremendous new artist! Join me!
